What is SpamAssassin?
SpamAssassin and SpamBox allow you to identify spam mail and flag it or
prevent it from entering your inbox. SpamAssassin is an automated email
filtering system that attempts to identify spam messages based on the
content of the email's headers and body. SpamBox will deliver any emails
identified as spam by SpamAssassin into a separate mail folder named "spam".
This "spam" folder will fill up and should be emptied regularly.
To learn more about SpamAssassin, view the web site at http://spamassassin.apache.org/.
NOTICE! Please note that you can only use BoxTrapper Spam trap or SpamAssassin on an email account, not both. To learn about BoxTrapper, view the Email Verification (BoxTrapper) document.
Enabling/Disabling SpamAssassin
1. When the page loads you will see the following message in the first section of the SpamAssassin page:
"SpamAssassin is currently (DISABLED or ENABLED)."
If SpamAssassin is DISABLED, click on the "Enable SpamAssassin" button.
If SpamAssassin is ENABLED, click on the "Disable SpamAssassin" button.
Depending on the option you chose in Step 1 above, you will see the following confirmation message:
"SpamAssassin is now: (ENABLED or DISABLED)."
Filtering SpamAssassin Emails
If you want your Spam emails to be filtered into a separate folder, you can set the system to send all emails marked as Spam to a Spam Box.
Note: First make sure you have enabled SpamAssassin by following the instructions in the "Enabling/Disabling SpamAssassin" section above.
1. In the "Filters" section of the SpamAssassin page, the first option you see is the following:
"Spam Auto Delete is (ENABLED or DISABLED)."
If Spam Auto Delete is DISABLED, click on the "Enable Auto-Delete Spam" button on the right side of the "Filters" section.
If Spam Auto Delete is ENABLED, click on the "Disable Auto-Delete Spam" button on the right side of the "Filters" section.
You will see the following confirmation message:
"Spam Auto Delete is now: (ENABLED or DISABLED)."
2. Next, select the score number you want to use to determine if an email is spam from the "Score" drop down menu. The default value is "5" out of 10. The higher the number, the more conservative SpamAssassin will be in determining whether or not an email should be filtered into the Spam box. Please note that the highest setting in cPanel is 10.
Note: For example, if you set the value to 10, anything SpamAssassin thinks is 1-9 will be marked accordingly. Anything above 10 will be deleted automatically. If you set the value to 5, anything SpamAssassin thinks is 1-4 will be marked accordingly. Anything above 5 will be deleted automatically.
Enabling/Disabling Spam Box
SpamBox will deliver any emails identified as spam by SpamAssassin into a separate mail folder named "spam."
Note: The "spam" folder fills up quickly and should be emptied on a regular basis. At any point in the future, if you want to clear the Spam Box, click on the "Clear Spam Box" button. All emails marked as Spam will be deleted from the Spam Box folder entirely.
1. In the "Spam Box" section of the SpamAssassin page, you will see the following:
"Spam Box is currently (ENABLED or DISABLED)."
If Spam Box is DISABLED, click on the "Enable Spam Box" button.
If Spam Box is ENABLED, click on the "Disable Spam Box" button.
You will see the following confirmation message:
"Spam Box is now: (ENABLED or DISABLED)."
